Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have done any fencing previous to joining the club?

No.
Every year we get up to 50 complete beginners join the club. We basically put you through a crash course in the basics, so much so that by Christmas you’ll be good enough to enter our beginner’s competition, an internally run tournament open only to beginners and with prizes for everybody.

Do I need to buy any kit?

No.
We lend you all the kit you’ll need, from jackets, masks and gloves all the way through to bodywires and electric weapons. If you do have your own kit please bring it along, and if you want to get into fencing seriously and buy your stuff, the club can get you some great deals.

Does it hurt when I get hit?

No.
Firstly you’ve got all that protective equipment and secondly only a small amount of pressure from the sword tip is needed to score a hit, and we will train you so you don’t hit harder than you need to.

Do I need to come to all the training sessions?

No.
You come to as many or a few training sessions as you feel like. You can even come to half a training session if you have a lecture during the other half. Just turn up, say hi and get fencing.

I can’t join online. Are there any other options available?

Yes.
You can join at the finance office (in the plug bar, on the right as you come up the stairs, past the toilets), or just give the money to a committee member at a training session and they’ll do it for you.
